Ants are the most numerous insect worldwide – it’s estimated that there may be as many as 100,000 trillion of them on the planet (that’s a lot of ants AND zeros). So, it should come as no surprise that ants are the most commonly mentioned in requests for pest control services.
Since ants are social insects -- they live in groups called colonies -- if you see a few, many more are bound to follow as they search for food or a new home. Ants leave a pheromone trail and can have multiple nests for their colonies set up between your yard and the properties around you.
And while most ants are relatively harmless to humans – although they can spread germs as they invade your pantry – some species, such as carpenter ants, can damage wood structures. Then again, some species are aggressive and can deliver a painful bite. The most common in the U.S. is the fire ant, which can also lay some serious waste to your lawn.
How to Get Rid of Ants
If you find yourself saying, "there are ants in my house!" Don't worry. There are a few things you can do to avoid and help get rid of these ants. One of the first things you can do is make sure the food in your fridge or pantry, or that on your counter is tightly sealed when not being eaten. Small crumbs and bits of food can go unnoticed by us, but to ants these are giant meals calling their name. By keeping your counters and floors clean, you can reduce the chances of an ant infestation.
Also, by blocking any points of access, you can prevent ants (and other bugs) from sneaking into your home or business. Check the baseboards, corners, and windows for small cracks that could be letting these pests in. However, it is unlikely you will find every single, tiny hole that ants can use as an entrance. That’s where we come in.
