Spring Update

Today, we applied liquid fertilizer, pre and post emergent weed control. For the best results, please follow the post-application instructions below:

  • Water in the application with ½ – ¾ in of rainfall or irrigation within 2-3 days of the application for best results. You may see minor discoloration around weeds sprayed but will recover with watering.
  • Do not mow your lawn until the application has been watered in as stated above and after 48 hours of the application. A percentage of the product will remain on the leaf and stem tissue of the weeds until it is watered in. Mowing within 48 hours can remove the weed control and reduce its ability to control the weeds.

Mowing Height

To prepare your lawn for spring green-up, we recommend that you start lowering the mowing height of your Bermuda and Zoysia during March. Mowing the grass lower will allow the soil to warm up, allowing for faster green-up.

Watering Your Lawn

We are now applying liquid fertilizer and pre-emergent weed control. It’s important to water it in within 7 to 10 days! This application stops many spring and summer weeds from germinating. Our liquid pre-emergent is the most effective treatment to establish a protective barrier to prevent these weeds.

Thicker Grass

Pre-emergent will not last as long if there are thin grass areas, heavily compacted soil, excessive surface moisture and low mowed turf. If you have any of these conditions, expect to see weeds. We can target and control the weeds that do come in, but it’s always better to prevent them. Remember, the thicker the grass, the lower the chance of lots of weeds!

Aeration

Compacted soil prevents air, water, and fertilizer from reaching your lawn’s root system and may cause dead spots, patches and/or thinning. Aerating your lawn increases penetration of vital water, air and nutrients. It also loosens soil to encourage deeper, broader root growth and helps soil fungi and bacteria degrade thatch. Aerating also allows the weed control treatment to reach the weed’s root system. Contact Waynes if you need your lawn aerated!

American Burnweed

American Burnweed (aka Fireweed) is a summer annual that appears May through June. Currently no pre-emergent herbicide exists that prevents it and lawns with excessive thatch are more likely to be infested. Mowing, weed control applications, raking and removing excessive thatch can minimize your potential for an outbreak.
