Spring Lawn Prep 101

Spring Lawn Prep 101

According to the legendary groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, we have an early spring coming our way. It’s time to suit up, polish your lawn care tools, and dust off your lawnmower. Prepping your lawn for spring can be a lot of work, so it’s best to start preparing early. We’ve provided you with spring prep tips that will grow you that barefoot good lawn this spring.

Spring Cleaning Isn’t Just for the Inside of your Home

When you’re making your spring cleaning checklist, don’t forget to add lawn care! A clean lawn is detrimental to having a healthy, lush lawn. Be sure to rake to pick up the layer of dead grass and fallen leaves. Remove all debris to allow room for new growth.

Wipeout Weeds

Invest in a good pre-emergent herbicide to prevent weeds before they even start growing. Pull weeds that already emerged or kill them using a post-emergent herbicide. When you give weeds the opportunity to germinate, the problem can become difficult to manage.

Plan to Fertilize

Using fertilizer is something you should do once spring has already begun, but it’s never too soon to start planning. It would be smart to plan ahead by creating a fertilizer schedule to prevent over-fertilizing and harm to your lawn. It’s important to not use fertilizer too early as this can cause disease and weed problems.

Inspect your Lawn Mower and Brush Up on your Mowing Skills

The condition of your lawnmower directly affects the condition of your lawn. Try starting up your lawnmower, because chances are, you haven’t used that thing in months. If it starts up fine and looks good, then fantastic! If your mower is hesitating a bit, it may be time for a tune-up or a whole new mower. It pays to know what you’re doing before you do it. If you care about the health of your lawn, it’s worth doing some research on lawn mowing strategies beforehand. Right before spring is the perfect time to learn.

Water

Without water, your lawn would be no good. What used to be grass would turn dry and brown and be invaded by weeds. You don’t want that. It’s best to figure out how your lawn can be nourished properly so that it can remain healthy all spring. Sometimes droughts happen, and the best way to work your way around it is by investing in an irrigation system. The system will do all the work for you. You won’t even have to lift a water hose.

You shouldn’t have to do this all on your own. Prepping for spring and caring for your lawn throughout the spring can be a hassle, but that’s what we’re here for. Waynes provides custom-blended fertilizers, disease management, and many other services that you may find difficult to do on your own.
