Rodent Awareness Week: How to Protect Your Home from Winter Rodent Infestations

As temperatures drop and the cozy indoors become more inviting, so do the chances of unwanted rodent guests entering your home. In honor of Rodent Awareness Week, Waynes is here to alert homeowners to the surge of rodent invasions during the fall and winter months. An estimated 21 million homes are invaded by rodents each winter, posing serious risks to your health, food supply, and property. Here’s what you need to know to protect your home from these sneaky intruders.

Rodents: More Than Just a Nuisance

“Rodents are more than just a seasonal nuisance, they can pose real threats to both health and property,” says Dr. Jim Fredericks, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for the National Pest Management Association (NPMA). Rodents, such as mice and rats, carry diseases, contaminate food, and can cause significant structural damage to homes by chewing through insulation, wires, and even drywall.

While 43% of Americans are aware that rodents can transmit dangerous diseases, according to a recent NPMA survey conducted by The Harris Poll, only 17% call a pest control professional at the first sign of a rodent problem. This delay in action can lead to infestations spiraling out of control.

Why You Shouldn’t Handle Rodent Infestations Alone

“The threats posed by rodents are real, so an infestation should not be treated as a DIY task,” Fredericks warns. “A qualified pest control professional can help identify the issues and develop a course of action before an infestation gets out of hand. At the first sign of a rodent problem, call a pro.”

Protect Your Home with These NPMA Tips

To help homeowners safeguard their homes this fall and winter, NPMA offers simple yet effective tips to prevent rodents from entering:

  1. Seal Cracks and Holes: Inspect your home for small openings, especially around doors, windows, and the foundation. Use caulk or steel wool to seal any gaps. Remember, mice can squeeze through holes as small as a dime!
  2. Proper Food Storage: Ensure all food, including pet food, is stored in airtight containers. Rodents are attracted to easy food sources, so cleaning up crumbs and spills immediately is crucial.
  3. Declutter Storage Areas: Rodents love to hide in clutter, so keep your basements, attics, and garages organized. Piles of boxes or unused items make for ideal hiding spots.
  4. Inspect for Signs of Rodents: Be on the lookout for rodent droppings, gnaw marks, or strange scratching noises, particularly in attics, basements, or behind walls.

Take Action at the First Sign of Trouble

Rodents may be small, but the damage and dangers they bring can be significant. To avoid costly repairs and potential health risks, take preventive measures now and don’t hesitate to contact a pest control professional at the first sign of an infestation. They have the tools and expertise to handle the situation safely and efficiently.

By following these steps and staying vigilant this season, you can protect your home and family from the serious risks posed by rodents. Don’t let your home become their winter refuge!
