Termites

There is nothing worse than being told your home has termites. Well, nothing except finding out that your insurance policy won’t actually cover the damage. The scary part is, most homeowners don’t even realize the risk they are taking. Fortunately, for our Waynes Termite customers, they have the peace of mind to know that should their home be under attack, they’re in good hands.

So what? Why is having termites such a big deal? Aren’t they just like any other pest out there? Simply put, the answer is no. Every year, termites cause over $5 Billion in property damage. Considering the fact that termites eat 24 hours - 7 days a week, it’s a wonder why they aren’t known to cause more damage than that!

A single mature colony of subterranean termites can house tens of thousands of termites whereas a mature colony of Formosans can house anywhere from 350,000 to 2 million termites per colony. Both are native to the communities we service and have been known to cause severe structural damage to neighboring homes.

Once a termite has identified a suitable structure to feed on, they will create a series of “mud tubes” on surrounding foundational walls that take them to and from their colony. These mud tubes are essential to their survival as they allow the workers to maintain the moisture they need to live.

Mud tubes are a clear sign that your home has termites. However, knocking them down does nothing more than scatter them about. This will ultimately cause them to find a more hidden area to establish other mud tubes making it more difficult to locate and treat the surrounding area.

Other signs you may have termites:

  • Damaged wood that appears to have paths carved throughout
  • Surfaces may have a rotten appearance and will be easy to penetrate
  • Small strands of earth-like material that looks like it is glued to the wood
  • Discarded wings near windowsills and other doors

Should you suspect you have termites, it is important you seek out a professional immediately. The longer you wait, the more damage your home could sustain.
