Minimize Risk: Tips on Reopening Your Business After COVID-19 Exposure

Unfortunately, COVID-19 has battered many of our local communities, leaving businesses struggling with the decision on whether or not to reopen. If a member of your business’s staff was exposed to the coronavirus, the thought of reopening can be even scarier.

If, however, you do decide to reopen, one of the best things you can do is educate yourself on how the virus works and how to disinfect your facility to the best of your ability. To that end, Waynes offers a few basic means of helping you get back on the road to reopening.

Air Filtration

It’s been proven that one of the most common ways that coronavirus is transmitted is through airborne droplets that are produced when a person shouts, sings, sneezes, or coughs. So, one way to limit the spread of the virus is by enhancing your air filtration system with MERV 14 filters. While use of such filters does not guarantee the prevention of viral spread, MERV 14 filters allow 86% fewer micron particles to pass through, as compared to the more common MERV 8 filters.

Disinfecting Surfaces

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the coronavirus can survive for hours to days on surfaces made from a variety of materials. For those surfaces with which people come into contact, the CDC recommends cleaning them frequently with soap and water, followed by a wipe down with a disinfectant (see below). Such a course of action helps remove germs, including the coronavirus, and decreases the chances of spreading disease.

EPA approved disinfectants include the following:

  • Clorox Bleach
  • Lysol® Disinfecting Wipes
  • Scrubbing Bubbles® Multi-Purpose Disinfectant
  • CURoxide™
  • Arm & Hammer Essentials™ Disinfecting Wipes
  • Windex Disinfectant Cleaner

Removing Furniture and Other Items

In addition to devising a plan on how often you will disinfect surfaces, consider if you should remove any items in your business to further lessen the chances of viral spread. Fewer items like seating and tables could decrease the opportunity for close contact between customers. Even removing items, such as condiments, napkin dispensers, and promotional materials will limit those shared surfaces on which the virus could be spread.
