It’s Termite Awareness Week!

It’s Termite Awareness Week!

Why is there an entire week dedicated to termites you may ask? Termites damage approximately 600,000 U.S. homes each year. But wait, there’s more! In total, approximately $5 billion is spent on termite damage and control in the U.S. each year. It’s important that everyone knows about the harm that termites can do therefore, there is an entire week devoted to educating the public about it.

The average person can’t tell the difference between a termite and a flying ant. The two do look similar which can make it hard to tell them apart. It’s important to know the difference in order to take the correct measures towards control.

There are different types of termites, but they all share the same form just different colors. They have broad waists and two pairs of wings that are the same size. They have straight antennae.

Flying ants

Flying ants have a pinched midsection with two pairs of wings, the bottom pair being significantly smaller. They also have elbowed antennae. One way to find out for sure if your unwanted guests are termites or flying ants is by calling Waynes for an inspection.

Another important thing to know is the conditions that put your home or business at risk of a termite invasion. These are called conducive conditions. Termite conducive conditions include:

  • Wood
  • Moisture near the structure
  • Wood-to-ground contact
  • Improper ventilation

You can look at parts of a structure and be able to identify if termites are active or were the culprits behind any damage. Signs that your structure has been damaged by termites include:

  • Mud tubes
  • Shed wings left behind
  • Damaged wood
  • Hollow wood
  • Drooping drywall
  • Small holes in drywall

We’ve given you a short guide to termites, something to refer back to when attempting to identify them. When it comes to getting rid of the silent destroyers, the best thing to do is let the professionals handle it. Waynes offers 24/7/365 protection. Waynes ensures around the clock peace of mind with the Constant Protection™ termite control featuring the Sentricon System with AlwaysActive technology.
