Beat the Dry Spell: Don’t Let Heat Stress Ruin Your Lawn

Summer is here and temperatures are reaching record highs! Though we look forward to warmer weather and seeing our grass thrive during the summer, too much heat can be detrimental to our lawns.

Our Lawn Care Professionals have all the tips and tricks you need to care for your lawn to avoid unwanted heat stress. From spotting the signs of too much heat to simple tips on how to keep your lawn lush and green this summer.

Signs of Heat Stress

The first step to spotting any signs of a heat-stressed lawn is to observe your grass for changes. If you notice any of these signs, it could be related to heat stress.

  • White/light blue grass, then black/brown
  • Patchiness
  • Weed/pest-control/ infestations
  • Thinning of grass
  • Wilting
  • Prominent footprints

If these signs are present, confirm that there is not another issue going on, like grub or chinch bug damage. A trusted Lawn Care Professional can take a look, address the issue, and facilitate a proper treatment plan.

Treating Heat Stress

Just like we need water when it’s too hot, so does your lawn. If heat stress is the issue, our Lawn Care Professionals recommend watering deeply and infrequently (2-3 times per week). Early morning watering is highly recommended, as afternoon water can lead to early evaporation.

Remain from mowing too low. Cutting too short can impact the lawn’s ability to produce the energy needed for growth. A safe tip is to never cut more than ⅓ of the leaf blade. You should also keep your mower blade sharp. A dull blade will cause the grass to heal slower.

It is also recommended to reduce foot traffic during heat stress. This means staying off the grass unless necessary, or you could compact the soil further. Try to keep pets, kids, friends, and family off of the lawn for extended periods of time during the driest months to give your lawn a better chance of a stress-free lifestyle.

Proper lawn care treatments year-round can make a world of a difference when it comes to your lawn’s health. Our trusted lawn care services are here to help with all your lawn needs. Call us today at 866.WAYNES1 to schedule an inspection today!
